Trench Excavation

Trenching hazards change fast, and the competent person must be prepared to recognize the change and act before someone enters danger. Our trenching and excavation training combines OSHA requirements with soil evaluation, protective-system decisions, field inspections, and realistic jobsite problem solving.

Courses are designed for competent persons, supervisors, foremen, operators, utility crews, public works teams, civil contractors, and employees who work in or around excavations.

Competent-person course content

• OSHA Subpart P responsibilities and the competent-person role
• Soil classification using visual and manual testing methods
• Sloping, benching, shoring, and shielding system selection
• Daily inspections, changing conditions, water accumulation, and adjacent structures
• Safe access and egress, spoil placement, mobile equipment, and overhead or underground utilities
• Hazardous atmospheres, traffic exposure, suspended loads, and emergency response
• Manufacturer tabulated data, engineered systems, and documentation expectations

User awareness and refresher training

We also provide focused awareness training for workers who enter or work near excavations. Refresher sessions can address rule changes, recurring deficiencies, incident findings, seasonal startup, or the specific protective systems your organization uses.

Practical delivery across the United States

Onsite training can include soil exercises, protective-system review, inspection practice, and field scenarios using your equipment and project conditions. Live virtual and hybrid options are available when appropriate, with practical verification planned separately when needed. We travel nationwide and can support U.S.-based companies performing work internationally.

Training supports the knowledge required for the role. The employer makes the final competent-person designation and must authorize that person to remove employees from danger and correct hazards.
